Accessibility is about designing for everyone, regardless of their physical, cognitive or technological capabilities. Not only do some organisations have legal responsibilities to ensure their information and services are accessible, it also makes good sense to ensure all your current and future customers can access your services.
It's important to remember that everyone uses the web differently. Some people turn images off, as this helps when download speed is an issue. Others can't use sound. Some need to be able to enlarge the font size in order to read online. While others use screen readers and other assistive devices to convert the onscreen text to, for example, Braille or synthesised speech.
As a result, interface designs need to provide the flexibility to ensure that all people can access the information and services they need. This doesn't mean pages need to be boring, static or have no pictures — it just requires the careful use of available technologies. Also known as Universal Design, you only need to develop one solution to suit everyone's different needs.
