According to ABS Statistics, one in five Australians experience a permanent disability of some sort. At least half of these people would benefit from more accessible design. There are a number of common myths about designing accessible websites. This includes the idea that “dumbing down” the site will address accessibility issues or that it is difficult and costly to build an accessible site.
However, what needs to be changed does not involve making your site any less interesting. By avoiding issues such as poor colour contrast, using flyout options that require too many hits of the tab key to get through and using images with no ALT tags. With adequate understanding of the accessibility standards and adequate accessibility testing of the site, it is easy to build a website that can be accessible, attractive and feature rich.
